The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on June 2 returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh, with Chief Minister Pema Khandu eyeing a third term.
Voting for the 60 assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh was held on April 19. Polling started at 7 AM and ended at 6 PM.
In the previous assembly elections, despite 60 seats in the assembly, the election only happened for 57 seats because three BJP candidates were already chosen without any opposition. The other parties won the remaining seats: Janata Dal (United) got seven, National People’s Party (NPP) got five, Congress got four, People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) got one, and independent candidates won two seats.
Arunachal Pradesh, the northeastern state of India, is mountainous and bordered by Bhutan, Myanmar, Nagaland, and Assam. Its capital is Itanagar. Formerly the North East Frontier Agency, it became a union territory in 1972 and a state in 1987.
Its known as the Land of the Rising Sun and has been mentioned in ancient Hindu texts. The region faces a sovereignty dispute between India and China. It spans an area of 32,333 square miles (83,743 square kilometres) with a population of 1,382,611 as of 2011.
The state is divided into 26 districts based on its unique cultural and geographical characteristics. The State Legislative Assembly ensures that all districts are represented through the elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA).
